Overview:

3400-30 B.C. - Ancient Egyptians used ingredients such as soot, copper, lead and burnt almonds on their lashes.  Other mixtures consisted of crocodile dung, honey and onion water.  Applicators were sticks of bone, wood, ivory or glass.

1872 - Petroleum jelly was patented and quickly became used to plump and gloss lashes.

1938 - With the arrival of waterproof mascara, women could cry a river and still stay chic!  Its 50 percent turpentine formula dried quickly, but it smelled awful and caused some allergic reactions.

1950's - Synthetic formulas replaced the petroleum base in most mascaras.

As they say, 'Out with the old & in with the new!'. . .

Does it matter? Yes!

Skin around the eyes is very sensitive as it's thin and has no oil-protecting glands. Toxins travel directly to the bloodstream.

Conventional mascara contains chemicals you'll want to avoid, such as quaternium-15, BHT, PEG, TEA and synthetic fragrance.  Waterproof mascara can contain plasticizers, like polystyrene sulfonate, which can irritate eyes and may be a hormone disruptor.

Petroleum-based ingredients, such as nylon and polyester, are also common in lash-building mascaras as they promote thickness and lengthening, but they have also been found to trigger contact dermatitis.
