Aromatherapy: A New From Old Science

For thousands of years, people have used the life force of plants for their spiritual, medicinal, fragrant and cosmetic properties. Essential oils - the aromatic liquid substances derived from plants - are age old. They're known to have been used medicinally and therapeutically in many civilizations, from as early as 1500 B.C. And the medicinal properties attributed to many common oils of ancient times have enjoyed almost continuous use in folk medicine ever since.

But it's all been rather an informal, through-the-generations wisdom that transversed almost 35 centuries. In fact, it wasn't until the 1920's that the French cosmetic chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse began what was to be a lifelong scientific study of the therapeutic properties of essential oils. In the process, Gattefosse also coined the phrase 'aromatherapy' to describe this new-from-old branch of the applied sciences.

Already Mainstream in Many Countries

In some places, aromatherapy has moved on conclusively from there. MiEssence Creator and ONEgroup Director Narelle Chenery says:

"In many countries, essential oils are included in the national pharmacopoeia. On the Continent where it originated, especially in France, the therapeutic use of essential oils - or aromatherapy - is incorporated into mainstream medicine. There, the use of the antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties of oils in the control of infections is emphasized. French doctors use a laboratory technique called the 'aromatogram' to guide their decisions on which essential oil to use."

Gaining Stature Around the Pacific Rim

In Australia, Japan and the United States, contemporary research has begun to confirm the abilities of pure essential oils to aid in the healing process. As centuries of practical use is affirmed by modern day professionals, people everywhere are sharing in a great awakening.

Meanwhile, as consumers start to think twice about the widespread use of chemicals and synthetic pharmaceuticals, essential oils are stepping up to provide a friendly, versatile, pure organic alternative.

To their delight, people are discovering that pure, organic essential oils are not just beneficial for their therapeutic properties. They can also be used to help green the family home, solve day-to-day health issues and bring balance to emotional well-being.

Product Quality is Paramount

But as with so many aspects of the organic movement, opportunists have spotted a marketing niche and are flooding it with less than perfect products. This is disastrous, since the real power - the life essence - of essential oils lies in their absolute purity.

Having scoured the world to identify the best certified products and the most authentic organic suppliers, Narelle Chenery says:

"I want to emphasize the absolute importance of using only pure, certified organic quality essential oils. ONEgroup products are the purest on the market, and contain no toxic residues of pesticides. We have also chosen our sources very carefully," Narelle explains.

"This is to ensure that the grower to-user-line is absolutely unsullied. But it goes even further than that because oils grown in different areas of the world and under diverse conditions can exhibit variances in their chemical make-up and therapeutic properties. No matter how pure they are, some are better than others."

Coming from Australia, but also as far afield as places such as Italy, Somalia, Corsica, Egypt and beyond, the certified organic essential oils hand-picked for the beautiful new ONEgroup collection are:

Therapeutic Effects of Essential Oils

The practice and use of essential oils is known as aromatherapy. However, there is so much more to aromatherapy than just delightful smells. The word 'aromatherapy' stems from two Ancient Greek words: 'aroma' meaning fragrance or pleasant smell, and 'therapeia' meaning healing.

Essential oils can be extracted by a steam distillation process from the aromatic plant, flower, leaf, seed, bark and fruit. The extracted oils can be helpful for a variety of uses, including emotional or physical ailments and complaints.

However, these beneficial effects are found only in natural components. Synthetic, man-made products full of 'fragrance' not only don't have the same effect - in fact, they can be downright toxic!

Aromatherapy works on our sense of smell and by absorption into the bloodstream. Scents we inhale reach the olfactory receptors on the roof of the nose and transport odors straight to the part of the brain called the limbic system. This area is connected with mood, emotion and instinct. Aromatherapy plays a role in the part of science which studies how particular smells can trigger and stimulate the release of chemicals that unlock emotions.

Think how the merest whiff of cloves and cinnamon can remind you of Grandma's baking, or how a girlfriend's perfume can trigger all sorts of memories!

Ancient civilizations used 'aromatherapy' in many ways - including massage, bathing, medicinally and even for embalming bodies. The concept was perhaps originally used around the same time in China, Egypt, the Middle East and by Native Americans, then brought to Europe by the Romans.

Modern-day aromatherapy is largely attributed to French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefoss, who began to investigate the healing powers of essential oils after noting how lavender essential oil seemed to aid the healing of a severe burn on his hand. Gattefoss wrote the first text on the subject published in 1937 : Gattefoss' Aromatherapy. It is still in print today!

Essential oils can be a great adjunct to modern treatments, particularly in the area of emotional healing and moods. Aromatherapy excels in this area because of the efficacy of essential oils to be assimilated and effectively integrated by the brain to enhance feelings and emotions.

Here are some great examples of the recognized therapeutic actions of these essential oils:

Testimonial:
My 5 and a half year old son has been suffering from growing pains in his legs for a
few years. After many doctors and specialist visits there was no answer for his very painful legs.

He would wake up in the middle of the night screaming because of the pain in his legs, it would take about an hour to calm him and using children’s panadol, this was happening on a regular basis normally 2 to 3 nights a week. There was nothing more distressing as a mother to see my little boy shaking and screaming in pain and not being able to take the pain away for him.

Then I used Narelle’s blend for growing pains (and miessence essential oils - of course) and within one minute of rubbing the blend into his legs he was completely calm & pain free. Within 5 minutes he was back asleep. I was amazed and so excited to finally have found something so simple that works so effectively. It has been over 3 weeks now and I rub the blend into his legs before he goes to sleep every night - he has not woken up once in the middle of the night in pain. Thank you so much.
