Many so-called bar soaps available in mainstream stores are not soaps at all but are synthetic detergents!
Does it matter? Yes!
Natural soap WAS traditionally made from a few natural ingredients, such as animal or vegetable fat with an alkali such as lye to create a reaction called saponification. Today, however, the reality is quite different. Drugstore-type soaps use fats or petroleum products that are processed in some other way than saponification.
Synthetic detergents use a cocktail of chemicals - including fragrances (which may contain up to 4000 chemicals alone!) and dyes. These ingredients clog pores and may pull natural oils and moisture from the skin, causing dryness and irritation - the last thing your skin needs, especially during cold winter months!
Many synthetic soap ingredients are common allergens and suspected carcinogens. Look for scary-sounding names such as DEA, TEA, isopropyl alcohol, SLS and BHT.Tallow (from sheep or beef fat) is a common ingredient that can be found in both natural and synthetic made soaps. Not my idea of an appealing way to wash up! Besides, one has to wonder how many dangerous chemicals have taken up residence in the body fat of these animals...
